About Ecoboom
Eco Who?
Ecoboom is an extremely inclusive website that will, we hope, provide everything you need for an eco-lifestyle: home, work and play. We like to think of ourselves as eco-pragmatists, so Ecoboom is also about saving you money and improving your life. There is a lot more to Ecoboom than that, so please use this site as best suits you – learning, talking, meeting people, making money, saving money or just having fun.
Ecoboom is about changing the world, but it’s not about us here at Ecocentral changing it alone – we don’t have all the answers and we don't want to preach. We don’t expect everyone to become eco-warriors and live in a tepee, but we do think that it’s up to all of us to stop the destruction of our planet.
We believe that we should all start taking small steps now and continue to do so every year, until we collectively reach a sustainable lifestyle. Remember, this applies as much at work as it does to our homes: to make a difference we have to start thinking about our world as a single, connected entity.
Companies are made up of people and run by people, governments are voted in by people and all company profits are, ultimately, made from people spending their money or investing their money. We are those people and we have the power to change the world – let’s use it: it’s our planet, our choice.
Who is responsible for all this here at Ecoboom? Well, Magnus has done the intelligent bits and Angus weaved many of the words together. They would both be glad to hear from you, but please be kind.
Eco How?
EcoCentral contains a wealth of explanation and advice on all things eco-friendly, from
soap to solar panels. The style is fairly light and, hopefully, readable. The articles should give you a good understanding of the issues involved and although they do not go into exhaustive detail, they do provide an excellent grounding to a vast range of topics. We have done quite a bit of research in putting this together, so we hope it is informative as well as interesting [1].
EcoCentral articles have links to further reading in our library (News & Links section), to the applicable areas of the Forum and to useful off-site spaces. There are also links to (hopefully) relevant areas of the Shop, so there is the full support if you decide to buy eco.
The Shop has a large range of ethical and eco products, which vary from the sublime
to the ridiculous: we don’t want to judge which is which ourselves, as we honestly believe that there is something for everyone! The items are for sale by third party, dedicated shopping sites. We give a picture, description and price for each item so that you can find the best thing for your requirements. We offer stuff from a lot of general eco and ethical shopping sites, as well as lots of small specialists, so that we should be able to offer you the largest range of prices and products anywhere on the net (or off it). If we are missing anything, please let us know.
The Forum is the place to chat. It works the same way as any other forum out there, so please go and have a
play with it to find out more.
T
he Community is designed for individuals and organisations to get involved together. It’s great for networking, but it is also a little unusual. There are all the normal profile bits and pieces – such as joining groups and making friends - but there are features held within your profile space that are also displayed in other areas of the website. These include the Market Place, Lift Share, Jobs and Events.
Take the Market Place as an example: imagine you are joining Ecoboom as a company that has a lot of plastic waste. On your profile page you could say you have lots of plastic going begging, say it is on offer for free and then post it. When anyone else searches the Market Place for plastic, or offerings from companies in your area, or free stuff, your Market Place entry will come up with a link to mail you. The same can be done for personal or company stuff for sale, or for resource sharing such as waste heat or space in delivery vehicles.
There’s a lot more to the Community and if you want any goods or services that are ecologically sound, searching the Community would be a good place to start finding them.
The News & Articles section is a large and ever expanding information resource. There
are numerous news feeds and fact sheets, as well as zillions of links to off-site information of every kind. The entries in the News & Articles section are not categorised as our brains started to hurt at that point, but it is searchable for keyworks, publications, dates etc.
Ecoboom is so much more than just the above, but I think this is quite enough explanation for now. Please just play around with it as much as you like, or as little as takes your fancy. Oh, and please tell your friends about us. Thanks.
[1] Please do not take the ‘What to do’ or any other sections as recommendations on action to take, but purely as advice on concepts to consider. We do not accept responsibility for any consequences that result from anyone acting on these suggestions. We’re doing the best we can, so don’t sue us.
